Merry Christmas!

A few months behind, but didn't want to miss out on a chance to celebrate Christmas.

This Christmas has been a sobering season, feeling the pain of the shooting in CT, and then a few days later, being burglarized (but thank God, with just a few Christmas gifts stolen).  Sobering, but not less festive.  For Christ is born, and these events make us realize how much we need Him.  This holiday isn't about warm fuzzy feelings or positive energy.  It is about His coming to a world that desperately needed salvation, and that is no less true 2000+ years later.

Peace on earth.  Goodwill to men.  Merry Christmas, every one.

Mary and Elizabeth...

Friendship.  A special friendship.  A friendship among two women.  Sandwiched in our Bible book with plenty of male heroes and masculine authors even, it is refreshing to find tender tales that shows our God is not just the author of the lives of the Moseses, Samsons, and Davids, but also of the Ruths and Naomis, and the Mary and Elizabeths.

Mary and Elizabeth were unlikely friends.  We know that though they were related, they were disparate in age, Mary, probably a teenager, and Elizabeth, probably post-menopausal, old enough to be Mary’s mother.  They did not even live in the same area.

But both these women were to carry the most special of babies.  Appointed dual tasks that were both great blessings yet great responsibilities.  And each was an unlikely mother.  One because she was too young (not to mention a virgin), and to the other because she was old, too old to have had any more hope that her prayers for a child would ever be answered.

The spark that united them was two unprecedented birth announcements…both directly from God.  Mary is told by Gabriel that Elizabeth is 6 months along.  And Elizabeth, when she sees Mary, calls her the “mother of my Lord”.  She knew…divinely.  And in the moment when Elizabeth embraced Mary with joy, a unique friendship began.

It isn’t hard to imagine what Mary must have been thinking on her journey to see her cousin.  An angel had just told her she was pregnant.  And she was a virgin.  And she was engaged.  Certainly she was worrying about how she would reconcile this to her parents and to her fiancĂ©.  I’m sure the trip to Judea to see Elizabeth was a welcome respite to delay the inevitable day the news would break and her scandalous pregnancy discovered.

When she saw Elizabeth, how wondrously comforting it must have been to not have to explain to her cousin the mystery of an angel’s visitation, and to avoid what would have certainly been an awkward “I’m-pregnant-by-divine-power” story.  And imagine what relief it must have been to have this miracle once again reconfirmed by Elizabeth and unborn John’s cheerful greeting.

Certainly the weight of the destiny of their children must have weighed heavy on their hearts.  I wonder if they had discussions over washing breakfast dishes about how the prophecies would be fulfilled in each of their sons.  Perhaps they were too bewildered to even think that way, but certainly, if they did ever entertain such imaginations, it would have been easy to confide in the other.

How precious that God would have provided in such an intimate, practical, and feminine way!  Their friendship must have been a balm to the worry, anxiety, and isolation that both of them felt.  In reality, there weren’t many of Elizabeth’s friends still changing diapers.  To have someone to talk to during her last trimester (remember, her husband was very quiet, and likely frustrated, shall we infer, without knowing if he would ever speak a word again) must have been a welcome reprieve.

And Mary’s friends were young teenagers, still in the carefree innocence of their youth, while Mary’s heart was anything but carefree.  Having this oasis of this time with Elizabeth must have nourished her soul for the long journey she had ahead of her.  To be able to simply be happy about the life growing within her before having to face the dread some task of disclosing it to her parents and to Joseph, what a gift!  To be able to see baby John and hear his cry, and see the miracle of Zachariah’s voice restored, how heartening!  These events emboldened her faith, and gave her courage to face what seemed an impossible task.

When our God wrote out the checklist for the birth of His Immanuel, He had several angelic visitations, a choir of the heavenly host, a perfectly-timed empire-wide tax decree, an inn without vacancy, an stable with a manger, visitations from far away visitors (complete with a perfect three-part gift list), a giant star, an angry king, the list goes on.  But he also had one more thing on his list, a special friendship for two otherwise ordinary women.

I love a God who knows how to satisfy our deepest need in ways that we cannot possibly expect.  A God who doesn’t just show up with angelic revelations and heavenly choirs, but with soothing comforts of the gift of just having a best friend.  I love that my God does not just know the heart of man, but the heart of a woman as well.

The Plague

Two families we know got hit with lice this summer.  Clueless me didn't' even think about checking for it.  Until talking about it with them, I started to itch, but was it just cause I was talking about it?  But then the itch, and next day, still itchy.

Groan.  Sure, we had lice.  House professionally cleaned.  Hotel reserved for a night (to let the lice at home die a hostless death.)  Two lice removal methods performed on Mike, Caleb, and Matt.  Hudson was free from the buggers.  6 hours of combing and washing and drying later, I was exhausted.

The next morning Kristina and I forked over a small fortune to have our hair professionally combed at a lice removal salon.  Yes, they exist.  It might have been overkill, but we simply didn't have enough time to do everyone in a single evening, and dragging the removal process out would have likely continued to spread the bugs around indefinitely.

The first 24 hours, I was in survival mode.  Kill the lice was my highest priority.  Whatever it takes.  But my dear friend happened to be with me when I was finally done and went to my car.  I just melted in tears.  The motherly desire to protect my family was incredibly stressful.  I didn't want to unduly strain our finances, but I couldn't imagine putting up with lice for weeks or months on end.  Or risk getting others around us infected.

In the end, I learned a lot, and so far, we remain plague free.  Phew.

The night of our infestation that we spent at a hotel, we went out for chinese food, and just before I was to spend hours on end de-licing my menfolk, this was my fortune cookie.  I think God has a sense of humor.

First Day of School

The first day of the first grade...

A very proud mommy

Crazy Kiddos
And a one and a two...

I am...the BOMB!
Getting ready to be the oldest child, finally!  During the day at least!

I wore this shirt the day I officially adopted him. It has a key on it and the words "Always." I bought it thinking that my son will always have the key to my heart. And today, his first day of first grade...same shirt, same sentiment.

Sr. Loco

An attempt at a group shot

Next year's incoming kindergarten troublemakers.

Very, very cool fact...our cousin Orion, who happens to live in our neighborhood, is also coming to Puesta del Sol.  How cool to see him and his family EVERY DAY!

Matt and his pal, Tayla Ann (Holding onto this photo for when he takes her to prom.)

And its the first day of school, again.  Caleb is in second grade.  Matthew is in first.  And once again, the beautiful weather that has dodged us at the beginning of the summer is lingering on well into September.

I remember at the beginning of the summer being a bit nervous.  I was used to two kids in school, and now we were going to have 5 kids (including my nephew on most days) home with us all day.  But I underestimated how much fun it would be.  Yes, not nearly enough school work got done, we didn't' even touch the library reading program…not to say we didn't read, but not as much as we should have, and couldn't be bothered to track it.   But oh well, the kids got to be kids, and we had many fun family memories.

Gone are the days when I would drag little tykes to the park just to keep from going crazy at home.  Spending time with them is an adventure, it is beyond enjoyable, and yes, it still helps to keep from going crazy at home.  Especially with the mess part.

I am so thankful for summers like these.  These memories will be forever in our minds, and I think one of the best things I can give my children are happy memories of their summers with mom.

That being said, I think I'll get a lot more household stuff done with two kids in school full-time.  But I will miss them.

Boise - 6th Annual Trip

Kristina shows her tough stuff at Sonic.

First boating day: Black Canyon Park

What's that?

Unhappy about something

Katie, Caleb and I get ready to rock.

Mike takes Hudson out on the jet ski...yes, he LOVED it!

Uncle Don does a backflip

Adorable and pregnant Brenda

Mike tries on the gear

Kristina loves the sand

Jeff and Amarada

I think I spent 2 hours taking the kids out on the jet ski while we were at Lucky Peaks.  What a blast!

So kissable

Loading up the raft for the trip back to the ramp

Katie and Caleb attack Jeff with driftwood

And we're off to our 6th annual Boise trip to see Mike's family.  Certainly the most successful and fun one yet.  Things are much easier when you aren't pregnant or having a child under 2.  So that would be the first year that I qualify on both counts.

We also chose to stay near Boise at our inlaws since they are expecting a new baby boy in a few months.  The pace was perfect.  Two days we went boating, once in Black Canyon Park, the other in Lucky Peaks.  The guys golfed, the ladies had time to shop.  And we didn't have to camp out.

Jeff and his wife even came to show off my niece, Amarada.  Such a doll!  Fun time with family, and a great way to end the summer.

Ladies Weekend Away

Cheers!
This weekend, the ladies from my small group went to the Kitsap Peninsula and stayed at one of the gal's family vacation homes.  All seven of us had a great time.  I think we just talked.  We would eat and talk, or walk and talk, or prepare more food and talk.  It was exhausting to talk so much!  But we all grew closer and learned so much more about each other.  I am humbled to be among such women of character, inner beauty, and God-given strength.  I am truly blessed to have such good, genuine friends.

Soccer Player

Caleb has FINALLY gotten the soccer bug.  First the Sounders game, and now he enjoys playing.  He had two soccer camps this summer with a group from the UK that makes the kids feel much more like soccer stars with their fancy accents. Caleb had a blast, and even managed to handle a full day camp without a bit of complaint.

Summer BBQs at Home

Me and Mr. Handsome

Mr. Goof-ball

Dad puts his secret sauce on some beef ribs

Thanks to my sister, we finally got some decent patio furniture

Oh, YUM!

I love moments like these!

Many evenings were spent this summer with a simple meal, sometimes just hot dogs or sausage, and lots of time just hanging out on the deck.  I'd love to have a fire pit on a pretty deck overlooking a nicely landscaped yard, but this year I'll just settle for a charcoal campfire pit sitting on my childhood nightstand, now warped from rain, on a deck that is all but rotted and is shedding paint chips by the handful, and my yard is a mess of rotten rail ties and yellow grass (it is yellow because it hasn't rained and my husband is too busy boating to mow anyways, so I guess that's all good.)

But the key ingredient is the wonderful kids that climb on my lap and ask me for s'more fixings when we do dessert.  And one thing I will give that charcoal campfire pit…it roasts the best darn marshmallows ever.

Boating!

These photos represent a bunch of different times we went out on our new toy, our '89 Bayliner waterski boat.  I didn't feel like dragging my nice Canon into a situation just begging for an aquatic baptism and likely untimely death.  So all these are all from various times over the summer taken from the humble iPhone (the camera ain't what its advertised up to be....just saying')

We bought the boat back in September last year, and to make a very painful story quite short, it ran about an hour before the boat died in the middle of Lake Washington, and required a very costly fix, and effectively putting our boating dreams on hold until the spring.

But summer FINALLY came, and by July we were "messing about in a boat".  Our uncle let us keep the boat at his dock on Lake Washington, and it made it so convenient to go out multiple evenings every week.  We had such fun taking friends out and kneeboarding, wake boarding, and inner tubing.

This summer was full of evenings with friends, and it truly made this summer our most memorable yet.

I'm afraid we have been seriously bit by the boating bug.  Our kids all love it, no one gets sea-sick.  I loved boating as a kid, and I'm afraid forget dreaming of a cabin or an RV or trailer.  We're getting wet!
